Bio
Zack Ryan
Vocals & Guitar
Raised in Southern California in the heart of the greater Los Angeles area, Zack fell in love with rock music at a very young age. He began to play guitar by the age of eight, with early influences ranging from AC/DC and Led Zeppelin, to Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd, he quickly progressed along his musical path into the arms of punk rock and grunge music with idols ranging from Nirvana and Sonic Youth, to the Descendents, Black Flag, and the Adolescents. Playing in a multitude of different bands through the years of a variety of genres, Zack first started out in a punk band by the name of “Losers” which fell to pieces in a matter of months. Zack played guitar for a short period in a death metal band called “Draven”, which eventually disbanded due to the loss of their bassist. Heavy into the psychedelic scene by this time, Zack joined with another guitarist and formed a psychedelic blues duo called “The Unknown” which came to a screeching halt with the unexpected suicide of his fellow guitarist who went by the name of Gambet. Through the aftermath left behind in the wake of Gambet’s untimely death, music took a back seat in Zack’s life for a couple years. The next musical endeavor Zack would undertake was a few years later as the lead guitarist for the orange county psychedelic rock band “Cruise Ship”. This was arguably the period of time in Zack’s life when his musical prowess began to explode in a variety of ways, with this role playing a major part in his future with music. Zack continued to play a vital role in the musical direction of this group alongside Cruise Ship lead vocalist David Rodas, and drummer Kenneth Rodas who were both long time friends with Zack dating back to his early high school years. Cruise Ship was working on their first album when they parted ways due to internal conflicts with their bassist. Zack then only playing guitar during his free time, came to form a half baked alternative rock duo with fellow guitarist and long time friend Josh Ring, by the name of “Three Goats”. This project was very short lived due to struggles in Zack’s home life. The next several years of Zack’s life were chaotic at best, as he moved around quite a bit with no real roots in place. Zack had his fair share of struggles with addiction and major depression, though these issues never put a stop to the music. Zack shortly began work on a solo project under the name of Zack Ryan, and over a period of three years, living mostly in a tiny bedroom in a mobile home in the San Gabriel Valley, Zack wrote an immense amount of material that would eventually become the early works of SpoonFool. Working on his solo project, Zack enlisted the help of drummer Kenneth Rodas in early 2019 in order to begin performing his new songs. When looking for a bassist who could play the part, Josh Ring agreed to help out with this new project, which quickly came to be referred to as “Zack Ryan & The Noise”. This new trio went on to play several live shows through the summer and early fall of 2019 in a line up called Noisy Summer, but became stopped in its tracks due to Zack’s drug addiction which quickly got out of hand. Zack went to rehab in the late fall of 2019, and upon his release from the program he immediately linked up with Kenneth and Josh to begin work on a new project. With a clear new vision and a solidified concrete direction, SpoonFool was formed with Zack Ryan searing the vocals and shredding guitar, Josh Ring slapping thunder on the bass, and Kenneth Rodas kicking up some anarchy on on the drums. Though the struggle of the band business did continue when Kenneth Rodas left the group in early 2022 due to personal / career reasons, the dear original drummer departed on wonderful terms. The perfect person to fill the role has since established his position as SpoonFool's permanent drummer, the great and talented Mr. Adam Spurlock! SpoonFool continues to work on new material, with multiple expected releases in the works. Josh Ring
Bass Guitar
Josh, formally known as “Josh” recently changed his name to “Josh” as he feels it better represents him as a person, musician, and otherwise. In Josh’s early years, he was introduced to rock n’ roll music in a manner he refers to as, “parenting at its finest.” He quickly fell in love with bands like The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, etc.; He then stated, “You know, all the generic ‘classic rock radio’ bands.” In his eyes, these songs weren’t just songs. Josh explained how he would sit in front of his father's classic speaker system after getting home from school in 2nd grade and listening to Pink Floyd's, Dark Side of the Moon on repeat until he could hear it in his sleep, which is exactly what he wanted. Before this, Josh’s interest in music began when his sister started taking piano lessons and after her sessions, would try to learn those songs she was learning by ear or by remembering the tune. His uncle bought a starter nylon string guitar for his sister as a gift as he wanted her to learn the instrument, but Josh stated that he would pick up that guitar and try to “Make up little songs” from tunes that would come to him. In 2nd or 3rd grade the students at his school were learning the recorder in music class and encouraged to take the instrument home to practice. Josh was privy to this suggestion and took the instrument home and taught himself one of the many orchestral pieces from the movie Lord of the Rings, by ear. Josh claims he didn’t really begin to seriously play guitar (his instrument of choice) until the 4th grade as he was into sports. He very carefully explained that his love for playing music quickly progressed, then stated, “Baseball: I was always on the losing team, always. I don’t like losing. Still to this day, in the game of musical passion and instrumentation I remain undefeated. Although, I can't say the same for the game of life but that musical passion and instrumentation has gotten me 15 games over 500, which I'll take any day of the week.” Josh then took the reigns of the interview, and I quote, “Let's backtrack then fast forward, shall we? 10-16 years old: Lots of guitar every f***ing day, Pantera, Simon & Garfunkel, musical composition. 16-18 years old: Lots of guitar every F***ing day, booze, pot, dethklok, Hendrix, poetry, musical composition, songwriting. 18-20: Lots of booze every F***ing day, drugs, guitar, Guthrie Govan, Yngwie, Dream Theater. 20-22: Lots of booze every F***ing day, drugs, hospitals, seizures, and music when I was on a good one. 22-Present: sobriety, songwriting, bass, guitar, recording, poetry, love, passion, giving a fuck, and Spoonfool with like minded, sharply dressed men in whom I’m grateful to call friends and bandmates.” Josh continues to actively write, play, and record music but explained that he rarely listens to music anymore, as he prefers to create music without outside influence or any hindrance that would alter his musical composition, also, he prefers to sit and think.
- Shortly after this interview, “Josh” legally changed his name to “Josh” for reasons, and I quote, “Would only be understood by few and the few are even further between the folks who are referred to as less than average by men who count their blessings. These few need no explanation.”
Adam Spurlock
Drums
Raised in Southern California, music was an integral partof Adam's upbringing, with his dad having been a musician and a rocker back in the 80's his passion for music influenced Adam to pick up the drums at 9 years old. At first, drumming along to songs from Chuck Berry, AC/DC, Aerosmith, and Iron Maiden, Adam eventually found a wider range of influences behind the kit from bands such as Less Than Jake and Foo Fighters, to The Strokes, Rx Bandits, and System of a Down. Through his teen years he joined the highschool drumline and jazz band which served as the basis of his understanding of complex rhythms, timing, and his ability to read music. While attending college in San Diego California, Adam continued with his involvement in drumline, and was introduced into the DIY scene local to the city, with bands known as The Rinds, and 4th N Cedar. For the next 3 years his weekends were filled with playing shows in living rooms, backyards, dive bars, and venues across San Diego. Though, these bands would eventually fall apart at the start of the pandemic, leading him to step away from music for a couple of years. As things settled, Adam decided to leave the steady comfort of his 9-5 life to fully throw himself back into music with an aim to make a career and life as a professional drummer. In the early months of 2022, Adam found what he was looking for with SpoonFool, and has since continued to collaborate and serve as the heartbeat of the band, playing an integral part of the workings within.
